Matt Healey's Multicultural Education Portfolio

1) This book was such a good and interesting read for me.  It really opened my eyes to not only the privileges that I have, but also to the awful and depressing circumstances that so many individuals in this country, a first world country that claims to be one of the best, find themselves in.  I had several disruptions during the reading of this book.  One of the original disruptions I felt was when his mother enrolled him in school, she was told by the administrator that "there were no white classes, only black, hispanic, or chinese."  The choices allowed to them were restricted mainly to their race.  This left me completely dumbfounded.  Another was the story of how only he did not experience corporal punishment, but everyone else in his class seemed to because they were black and he was white.  His teacher didn't feel right hitting a white child, because they are "spoiled".  This disrupted me because I grew up with the mindset that as long a...

EXPERIENCE For my community experience assignment, I met with a friend of my sister's, Sarah, who is a social worker in Salt Lake City.  My sister got her bachelors and masters degrees in social work, but hasn't been involved in the profession for about 10 years for various reasons associated with the job, her past, and her personal goals, so I was very curious how the interview with her friend would go. The whole point of social work is for struggling families, individuals, etc. to improve their well-being.  It is a profession geared towards getting individuals back on the right track in order for them to have the highest chance for success.  I truly admire those who choose to pursue careers in social work, because it is most definitely an extremely difficult line of work and the things they must deal with are extremely difficult to witness at times.  I was glad to interview my sister's friend and get her feedback about her profession.  Overall it was a t...

For this assignment, I attended a church that my sister used to attend when she lived in Saratoga Springs, UT.  This church is a non-denominational church and she and her husband loved going to it.  I am LDS so this was definitely a new experience for me.  I attended several churches when I was on my mission in Germany, but I had never attended another church in the US besides my own.   The music was christian rock which I really enjoyed and it was a fun chapel. (Disclaimer: I was given permission to take this photo, even though there were a couple of kids in it :))  This was the room for the nursery age kids and it reminded me a lot of the nursery in my own ward. My experience honestly went as I imagined it, for the most part.  I introduced myself to the pastor (I think he's a pastor?
