Reflection on my Culture

I think something that really stood out to me as I pondered different objects and artifacts that make up my culture is how fortunate my childhood was compared to those of many people in this country.  I grew up never having to worry about whether I'd have food in my stomach, being afraid to go outside/ of my neighborhood, etc.  My mother was single for much of my childhood because my father passed away when I was 4.  But I still never got the feeling that we were at any major disadvantage.  This is a huge blessing for me.  However I can see this being a hindrance in certain areas, especially those of at risk children.  But I do feel that if I were to teach in this area of Utah, it could also be helpful because I know being in the Rocky Mountain region means that many families are outdoorsy and active just like I am/ was growing up.  This means that I would perhaps be better at understanding many of their interests/ points of view because they are most likely quite similar to the ones that I grew up with in general.  In no way am I saying that all people from certain areas are the same, but rather that because I know what this area has to offer as far as activities, food, etc. that I would find it much easier to relate with my students as opposed to moving to New York City and teaching there.
